frequently asked questions

WHY DID YOU START TOWN?

In preparation for my move to Honolulu, I started searching online for ways to explore both the city and Oahu. Unfortunately, 90% of my search results were geared towards tourists wanting an all-inclusive/mega-resort type experience or looking to check off the biggest landmarks in the shortest amount of time.

There wasn't a lot about the things I was interested in: the people, places, and things which made Old Hawaii so magical. I knew that version of Hawaii was still out there, I just had to find it. And, if I was looking for it, others probably were too.

WHY "TOWN"?

I chose "town" because it's a local nickname for the city of Honolulu. It's a throwback from the days when Honolulu was literally just a town with a few buildings. (Side note: can you even imagine Honolulu without a high-rise?!)

IS TOWN YOUR FULL TIME JOB?

Absolutely not, although life would be decidedly more fun that way. Town is a passion project and a mechanism which ensures I make the most of the beautiful and historical place I live in. In the real world, I work in human resources and as a freelance writer. You can see my work featured here and here.

WHAT IS YOUR FAMILY'S CONNECTION TO HAWAII?

My great-grandfather was stationed here as an Army Officer in the 1930's and simply never left (both he and my great-grandmother are buried at the Punchbowl Cemetery).

Since then, his children, grandchildren, and great-children have lived, worked, and/or vacationed on the island for the last half century. It's the place where my grandfather grew up, my mother spent many childhood summers, and, in a few months, it'll be the place where I got married!
